Catch up on our ‘Did you know?’ trivia!

This month, we gave our followers on Twitter and Facebook an interesting piece of trivia each day. So if you’ve missed any, don’t fret! We have them all here:

  • Did you know that if a spider dismantles her web, it means a bad storm is near? 
  • Did you know that apples should not be stored near potatoes? Apples give off ethylene gas which causes potatoes to sprout! 
  • Did you know that asparagus and rhubarb are the only vegetables that can reproduce on their own for several growing seasons? 
  • Onions contain a mild antibiotic that fights infections, soothes burns, tames bee stings and relieves the itch of athlete’s foot! 
  • Do you know when you should transplant trees and shrubs? Any month that has an “R” in it! Never May, June, July or August. 
  • Did you know carrots come in a range of colours? White&yellow carrots come from Europe. Purple ones come from the Middle East! 
  • Did you know that the daisy got its name because the yellow center resembled the sun? It was known as the “day’s eye” and then daisy. 
  • Did you know that ladybugs are able to produce a nasty tasting fluid from their leg joints to protect against predators? 
  • Cool as a cucumber? It’s true! The inside of a cucumber on the vine measures as much as 20 degrees cooler than the outside air on a warm day. 
  • Did you know that oak trees do not have acorns until they are fifty years old or older? 
  • Did you know that the fastest growing plant is bamboo? One particular species grows about one meter every day! 
  • Did you know that the thistle became Scotland’s national flower because it helped keep invaders out? Thistles & bare feet don’t mix! 
  • Although dandelions are considered weeds, their flowers and leaves are a good source of vitamins A&C, iron, potassium and calcium! 
  • Hope you’re enjoying the sunshine! Did you know that Babe Ruth wore a cabbage leaf under his cap to keep cool? Any takers?! 
  • Did you know that a large elm tree makes about 6 million leaves in a single season? 
  • Did you know that a snail can sleep for up to 3 years? Gives a whole new meaning to lie-ins! 
  • Did you know that if a tree turns its leaves upside down then you can expect rain? 
  • Did you know that when a coffee seed is planted, it takes five years to yield consumable fruit? 
  • Did you know that parsley is a natural breath freshener? Particularly in combating the smell of garlic! No need for gum! 
  • Did you know that bananas don’t grow on trees? They actually giant herbs from the same family as lilies! 
  • Did you know that tree rings not only tell us the age of the tree but can also tell us about environmental events, even volcanic eruptions! 
  • Did you know that trees receive an estimated 90% of their nutrition from the atmosphere and only 10% from the soil?

  • Did you know that no tree dies of old age? They are generally killed by insects, disease or by people.

  • Did you know that some trees can “talk” to each other? When willows are attacked by insects, they emit a chemical which warns other trees! 
  • Did you know that, thanks to their outstandingly buoyant quality, sunflower stems were once used to stuff life jackets?
